Cheap Diapers Using Coupons

Free Huggies from Walgreens 3/5/11

The diapers you see in this picture (4 jumbo packs of Huggies diapers) were purchased at Walgreens, using coupons.  My total cost after coupons was $2.80 for all four packs!  That works out to be 70 cents each– (the amount of the tax only).

So, the long-awaited moment… How’d I do that?

Before I begin, I will tell you that if you are new to coupons, when you finish reading here–you should consider clicking the link to the right that says The Krazy Coupon Lady, and read her post for “beginners.”  Couponing for household items can save you THOUSANDS of dollars every year on lots of other things besides just diapers!

Now, having said that, let’s talk about cheap diapers.  Here it is, in a nutshell: The trick to getting diapers at ridiculously low prices (even free sometimes) is to wait for a drug store to have a low sale price (I like them to be around $8.99), and then pair that sale with store promotions (we’ll talk about this in more detail in a minute), and manufacturer coupons.

So you probably have a bunch of questions rolling around your brain at this point.  Let’s talk about some of them:

  • What stores have the best prices? In my neck of the woods (a small town in central Washington), we have limited store choices.  I do pretty much all these diaper deals at either Walgreens or Riteaid.  Each store generally has the major brands on sale once per month (sometimes twice!), so if you shop both stores, you will have at least 2 opportunities each month to score cheap diapers.  To know ahead of time when the best sale on your brand is going to happen, you can preview the weekly store ads– weeks in advance.  There are links to these ad previews to your right, under “coupon links, Walgreens Ad Preview, & Riteaid Ad Preview”. Once you are on the ad preview website, look to the right side of the page.  You will see a list of date-ranges (EXAMPLE: 3-13 – 3-19) when you click on a date range, it will open the store ad for that week.  Look over the ad… If your brand isn’t on sale this week, check under other date ranges, and see when it WILL be on sale.

  • Where do you get the coupons? The Sunday paper is my main source for diaper coupons.  Our local paper doesn’t run a Sunday paper, so the coupon inserts come on Tuesdays and Fridays. You can see ahead of time, when your diaper coupons will be published by looking at the Sunday Coupon Preview (link to the right).  I signed up for email alerts each week, so once per week, they send me an email that tells what coupons will be included in Sunday’s paper, so I can see if I will need those coupons or not, and decide whether or not to buy the paper.  If you do not want to fuss with all of this, and don’t like the idea of clipping coupons– you can use a coupon clipping service (there’s a link to my favorite on the right).  You choose which coupons you want (you can search for them by brand), and they clip them for you and send them right to your door.  The shipping is flat rate, and is around $5.00. This method costs a little more than clipping them yourself from the paper, but it will save you some of the leg-work.  If you are someone with a very tight time-schedule, then using a clipping service will save you some time.  Personally, I do both.  Most of the time, I will opt to clip myself because I can do it easily in the evenings when the kids go to bed.  However, if I know that there’s going to be a massive sale on diapers in 3 weeks and I want to stock up– I will order the clipped coupons as well.

I have given you a lot to chew on for now.  To save you from having to scroll through pages of information in one setting, I am going to leave it at this for today.   Spend some time familiarizing yourself with the websites I have mentioned.  In upcoming blogs, I will tell you about store promotions (Register Rewards and +UPs), and stacking coupons.  We will also talk about how to organize transactions to keep the registers happy.  Don’t be overwhelmed by all of this, I promise in the days to come, I am going to explain everything in more detail, including the specifics of exactly how I got the deal in the picture– so YOU can do it TOO!

Free/Cheap Diapers

4 03 2011

Okay, so many of you have seen my recent facebook postings about getting ridiculously cheap, and even free baby items (diapers, wipes, etc..).  I have had a number of people message me, wanting to know how I do it.

Well hold onto your hat, because I am going to tell you several ways!

Let me just say that personally, I am an unashamed Huggies snob.  Everybody has their brand preference, and Huggies is mine.  With three kids in diapers, and with Huggies being one of the most expensive brands… You would think that I could go broke just keeping my kids’ bottoms clean and dry.

I will let you in on a little secret:  I NEVER pay more than around $4.00 per jumbo pack for Huggies diapers, and lately I have been getting them FREE!  How, you ask? Keep Reading!

Over the next couple days, I will explain in detail EXACTLY how you can get cheap and/or free diapers and wipes in your favorite brand– for far less than you could buy the leaky store brand for!

Tomorrow I will talk about coupons, and how you can use them to save a bundle on your baby-care items.

Monday, I will tell you how I have gotten 6 cases of wipes, 3 cases (yes, CASES) of diapers, and 3 bottles of Johnson’s Baby Wash– shipped right to my door– for less than a dollar for all!

Stay tuned, if you have kids in diapers– you NEED to hear this!
